A vocal element of verbal communication is spoken words-for example, “Come back here.” A vocal element of nonverbal communication isparalanguage, which is the vocalized but not verbal part of a spoken message, such as speaking rate, volume, and pitch. Verbal and nonverbal communication include both vocal and nonvocal elements, andTable 4.1 “Vocal and Nonvocal Elements of Communication” shows the relationship among vocal, nonvocal, verbal, and nonverbal aspects of communication. To further define nonverbal communication, we need to distinguish between vocal and verbal aspects of communication. Touch is an especially powerful form of nonverbal communication that we will discuss in this chapter, but we will not get into taste and smell, which have not received as much scholarly attention in relation to nonverbal communication as the other senses. But we can also receive messages and generate meaning through touch, taste, and smell. Since most of our communication relies on visual and auditory channels, those will be the focus of this chapter.
